Virtual Reality has made it to Boonslick !

Boonslick Regional Library Cole Camp Branch is on the cutting edge of technology. In the spring of 2018, the Cole Camp Branch was able to secure a substantial grant written specifically for bringing VR (Virtual Reality Technology) to its local patrons. According to Wikipedia “Virtual reality (VR) is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment. A person using virtual reality equipment is able to “look around” the artificial world, move around in it, and interact with virtual features or items.” The Cole Camp Branch of Boonslick Regional Library is the first public library in the area to bring this technology to the local, more rural communities that it serves.

Virtual Reality has been around for decades. Only recently has the technology become compact and affordable enough for the general public to take advantage of it. It has nearly endless potential for not only entertainment but even more so for education and training purposes. Of course, there are tons of really cool video games, but its educational applications are where it really shines in a library setting. The equipment consists of a headset that the user wears over their eyes, and a controller that allows them to navigate menus, and interact with the simulated space they occupy in the experience. Imagine being able to shrink down to a size smaller than an atom and learning chemistry and physics from watching firsthand how different molecules work together? How great would it be to have a model of the human body that you could study by assembling, and disassembling from the bones all the way out to the skin and hair? All while being guided and coached at your own speed, with no distractions from classmates? Sounds pretty great right? It is. The library has curated an ever-growing selection of educational software that helps understanding everything from simple math and language to understanding space-time. A student could even check out the event horizon of a black hole. The potential is there, and reality is quickly keeping up!
